Energy bikes
Purpose of the Workshop
In this workshop on energy bikes, students will explore the energy market and learn where our electricity comes from, how it is generated, and how we can produce sustainable and low-CO2 energy now and in the future. Through hands-on experience with energy bikes, they will discover the effort required to generate 1 kWh of electricity, increasing awareness of energy consumption and the origins of power.
This workshop aligns perfectly with curriculum goals related to sustainable energy, different types of electricity turbines, and the electricity grid.
Workshop Flow
The workshop begins with a presentation on electricity fundamentals and the various types of electricity. We will discuss units and examples illustrating the varying demand for electricity, actively engaging the class. We delve into large-scale electricity generation and the challenges in Belgium, supported by interactive examples.
Next, students will experience energy generation firsthand by pedaling the energy bikes. In the second part of the workshop, we focus on the future of energy generation, discussing new energy and storage systems, and providing practical tips for energy conservation and CO2 reduction.
The session concludes with a Kahoot quiz to test students' knowledge, with a prize awarded to the winner. Optionally, after the quiz, students can participate in a hands-on activity where they design their own city and outline the future energy supply, followed by presentations in small groups.
