In this project, we assessed the potential for sewage water heat recovery (riothermy) within the urban sewer network of Leuven. Due to limited available data, the COREnauts developed an alternative analysis method. They defined the length of the upstream sewer network (TOL) using QGIS to identify zones with the highest potential. This approach was later complemented by official household population equivalent (PE) data, enabling a comparison between both methods. The analysis highlighted areas such as Martelarenlaan, Naamsepoort, and Eenmeilaan as promising locations for riothermic applications.
The comparative study revealed strengths and weaknesses in both approaches. Notably, the TOL method offers a valuable alternative in cases where PE data are unavailable, such as at non-residential sites like hospitals or industrial zones.
