The Energy Week originated from the past project 'Klimaatbende of Leuven’, which consisted of a technical part, in which an energy study was offered to schools, and an educational part. The aim of the educational part is to bring students aged 10 to 13 into contact with the concept of energy.
The educational part bears the name ‘Energy Week’. In an Energy Week, CORE organizes a course package of 3 hours. The first hour consists of an interactive lesson on the concepts of energy and energy sources. These concepts are treated because it is important that the children get the right information at an early age: discussions about energy are an integral part of the media landscape.
The second hour consists of an energy activity in which the children apply the knowledge from the first lesson in a practical way. Through the different activities the children get a broader view on energy in daily life. For example, one of the activities is Energy Research. During this activity, the children search for energy-saving and energy-generating possibilities at a location within the school grounds. Another activity is making a lemon battery, in which the children make their own energy source to illuminate a light. In yet another activity, the students look at the different energy meters in the school, followed by a feedback to energy savings.
The last hour consists of an energy quiz. Here, the knowledge of the students is tested in a playful way. The students have to find polluting factories on a map. They can find them by answering different questions correctly. When all the polluting factories are found, the students can call themselves an Energy Hero.
Since September 2019, CORE offers this Energy Week as a separate activity to Leuven schools. The students of the 5th grade of Sint-Jan Leuven took part in the first Energy Week in the week of December 9th. The students were very enthusiastic and eager to learn about the different forms of energy. The next day, the children were allowed to look for energy-saving measures in a corridor of the school building. After their successful search, they visited the school's energy meters. On the last day, all students were promoted to Energy Hero.
